Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealership for car keys?

Can you make a car key with no original key?
Yes. The key blade is cut from the vehicle code derived from the VIN, not copied from an existing key, and the transponder is programmed directly to the immobiliser. You need proof of ownership — registration or title matching your ID.
Which vehicles can you not do?
Some late-model European vehicles, particularly certain Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volvo and Land Rover models, use encrypted systems that only a franchised dealer can write to. Dispatch tells you honestly on the phone if your VIN falls into that group rather than charging a call-out to find out.
Do I need to be there with proof of ownership?
Yes. The registered owner, or someone with written authorisation from them, must be present with photo ID and the registration or title. This is non-negotiable — it is what stops car keys being made for a vehicle that is not yours.
Will my lost key still start the car afterward?
No, provided you ask for the old key to be deleted. When a new key is programmed the technician can wipe all previously stored keys from the immobiliser, so a lost or stolen key stops working. Say so at booking if the old key was stolen.
