Broken Key Extraction in Speedway: what to expect
Calls to Speedway are dispatched from our Indianapolis base, roughly a 16-minute drive, which puts typical broken key extraction arrival at 15–25 minutes. That figure is what we actually average across Marion County, not a best case measured at 3am on an empty road.
Speedway is a separate incorporated town entirely surrounded by Indianapolis, and its call volume is unlike anywhere else in the metro because it is driven by the racing calendar. Indianapolis 500 weekend alone brings several hundred thousand visitors, and a large share of the town's annual car lockouts happen across those few days in the fields and lots around the Motor Speedway.
- Local notes for Speedway
Race weekends — the Indy 500 in May and the Brickyard in summer — produce the single heaviest concentration of car lockouts anywhere in the service area.
Grass overflow lots around the Speedway have no address and no space numbers, so a lot name plus a nearby gate number is essential for the technician to find you.
Georgetown Road and West 16th Street are closed or restricted during race events, which reroutes technicians and adds time; dispatch factors that into the arrival estimate.

- Worn key finally gave way in the door
What is included

How it works
Stop pulling on it
Pliers and superglue push the fragment deeper and score the wafers, turning a cheap job into a cylinder replacement. Leave it alone until the technician arrives.
Extract the fragment
Thin spiral or hook extractors grip the blade and draw it out along the keyway.
Inspect the cylinder
Wafers and springs are checked. Most cylinders survive the break with no damage.
Cut a replacement
A new key is cut on site, either from the extracted fragment or from the lock code.

Broken Key Extraction FAQs — Speedway
Questions specific to broken key extraction in Speedway, IN.
Do you work race weekends at the Speedway?
Yes, and race weekends are the busiest few days of our year. Indy 500 weekend produces a very high volume of car lockouts across the surrounding lots. Expect longer arrival windows than usual because of road closures on Georgetown Road and West 16th Street, and call as early as you can rather than waiting.
How do I tell you where my car is in a Speedway lot?
Give the lot name and the nearest gate number. The grass overflow lots around the Motor Speedway have no street address and no numbered spaces, so a lot name, a gate, plus your vehicle colour and make is what lets a technician actually find you. A dropped pin from your phone works even better.
Can you unlock a rental car during race week?
Yes, with the rental agreement in your name. Many race-week lockouts involve out-of-state visitors in rentals, and the rental contract plus your photo ID is what authorises entry. If the agreement is also locked in the car, the rental company can usually email you a copy.
Do you service Speedway businesses on Main Street?
Yes. The Main Street district uses a lot of aluminium storefront doors with Adams Rite style deadlatches and hook bolts, which are standard commercial hardware for us and are opened non-destructively in most cases. Commercial lockouts here are priority dispatched during trading hours.
Can a broken key be removed without replacing the lock?
In the large majority of cases, yes. Purpose-made extractor tools grip the fragment and pull it straight out along the keyway without disturbing the wafers or pins. Lock replacement only becomes necessary if the break was caused by an already-failing cylinder or if someone has previously tried to force it out.
Should I try to get it out myself?
No. Needle-nose pliers usually push the fragment deeper, and superglue is worse — it bonds the fragment to the internal wafers and turns a straightforward extraction into a full cylinder replacement. Leave the fragment in place and call.
Why did my key snap?
Almost always metal fatigue. Keys work-harden over years of turning and eventually crack, usually at the shoulder where the blade meets the head. Copies of copies are more brittle than originals. A key that has started to bend or feel loose in the lock is close to failing and should be replaced.
Can you cut a new key from the broken pieces?
Usually yes, if you still have the head section. The two halves are aligned and the cuts are read to produce a new key. If the head is lost, the key can instead be cut from the lock code by decoding the cylinder, or from the VIN on a vehicle.
Do you extract keys from padlocks and mailboxes?
Yes. Padlocks, mailbox locks, filing cabinets, desk drawers and gate locks are all serviceable. Small wafer locks like mailbox and cabinet cylinders are more delicate than door locks, so extraction is done carefully to avoid bending the thin wafers.
